I wasn't planning on watching the Super Bowl. For one, my Chicago Bears weren't playing. Second, I didn't like either team playing. Third, I don't really care about the commercials. But there was an interesting aspect to the Super Bowl and that was the possibility of the New England Patriots going undefeated, a feat that has not been done since the 1972 Miami Dolphins. So I ended up watching starting at the second half and I am glad I did.
I was expecting the game to be a blow out. The Patriots were a dominating force in the NFL this season. Tom Brady was unstoppable. Any time you have a quarterback who can throw 50 touchdowns in a season you have something special. Their offense scored on 53% of their possessions. They will go down in history as one of the best NFL teams to ever play the sport.
The Giants on the other hand had a good season but nothing news worthy. They had a rough start and then went on a winning streak. They barely made it into the playoffs and were not expected to be playing in the big game. Eli Manning had a less than stellar year at quarterback but managed to get his team the wins they needed.
The game itself was boring. The Patriots were up 7 to 3 for most of the game. The Giants struck first with a field goal and New England responded with a touchdown at the start of the second quarter. No one scored until the Giants made a touchdown with about 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Of course the Pats responded with a touchdown of their own on a drive that was very much like all the drives they made all year long. With 35 seconds left in the game. The Patriots couldn't respond and lost the game 17 to 14.
How disappointing that must be. To lose the big game to a wild card team when you have been demolishing opponents all season long. I wouldn't want to be anyone on the Patriots right now. The disappointment would be unbearable. It isn't often that a team goes undefeated and I give them mad props for doing so but in all reality they should have stomped a mud hole in the Giants. The key to their defeat is the unrelenting pressure the Giants put on Tom Brady. They gave him very little time to develop a rhythm. This is something other teams just couldn't do. Like I said, Tom Brady is an amazing quarterback and his offensive line gave him the time necessary to do what he needed to do but not last night. The Giants rushed and blitzed on almost every play. Poor Tom couldn't get it done.
The game was a nail biter and realistically the Patriots could have scored in those final seconds. They have the skill, they had all their timeouts, it could have been done. But the Giants defense would not allow it. I give a lot of credit to the Giants. They had a snowballs chance in hell to win and no one thought they would and they proved everyone wrong. I am happy for them and I am glad the Patriots lost, it will humble them severely. Overall a very good game and I am glad I ended up watching it.
