On Monday as I was walking to Union Station I passed the Canon building. Sitting on the steps was a man with a big sign that declared he was on a hunger strike to stop the bombing of Iran. This is the second hunger strike this man has done that I know of. As I passed him I started wondering about how many hungry people there are in the United States. According to a quick Google search, in 2006 there were roughly 744,000 homeless people in the United States. It would be safe to assume that a large number of the homeless people are hungry. Not being able to afford housing may result in you not having money to feed yourself.
So let's think about this. Three quarters of a million people are probably starving as we speak. The war still rages on and rumors of a conflict with Iran have increased. So this one man thinks he is important enough to stop the U.S. from bombing Iran. I'm glad he thinks so highly of himself but it is ridiculous to think the government is going to stop what they are doing just because one man is starving himself on purpose. The government already has shown they don't really care about our own starving people so why should they care about him? Seems to be a pretty lofty goal to me but what do I know. The guy comes across as a loony to me which is status quo for most of the protesters I see here in D.C..
The government is going to do what ever they want to do. History has shown us this. You deciding to starve yourself is not going to change the administration's mind on anything. I know people want to feel good about themselves and champion for a cause. If you want to do some good, how about helping feed some of the homeless? How about volunteering your time to the Red Cross? Donate some blood so the military has enough blood to help out the wounded. Stopping a military campaign is not an easy goal to obtain and isn't going to happen by the actions of one individual.
