I had to drive to work this morning and spent almost four hours in traffic. This is what happens when it rains in DC. While I was in my truck I was listening to the radio and they were discussing a baseball player and a proposed salary if he were to stick with his team. It boggled my mind.
I discussed this once before on a different version of this site but I still feel it needs to be discussed. The salary proposed was $270 million over ten years. That is $27 million a year. This is a just salary for someone who can hit a baseball? Granted, I couldn't hit a 90mph fastball and justly I am not in the Major Leagues. But if I could hit a 90mph fastball does that mean I am worth $27 million? I honestly don't think so. There are thousands of boys and girls who play baseball, some go on to college and play and very few go on to the Major Leagues. What makes these people so special. Why do they deserve ridiculous salaries.
There is no justice in this. Here are some occupations I think are more important than a professional athlete and what their average salary is (salaries derived from http://www.salary.com and http://www.dfas.mil):
Those people have way harder jobs than an athlete. They work year round. Three of the four I listed have jobs that put them in harm's way. This is completely backwards. Please don't think I feel the police deserve $27 million but I do feel they deserver for than $47 thousand. I don't think anyone deserves that kind of salary especially when we have hundreds of thousands of citizens who are homeless and jobless and our minimum wage is well below the poverty line.
Our economy sucks at the moment yet an organization can justify paying someone who is good at hitting a baseball $27 million dollars a year. It just doesn't make any sense to me. What is even scarier is how they treat their money. A fine example is a couple of months ago Lance Briggs, a linebacker with the Chicago Bears, crashed his Lamborghini into a light pole and left it. He just left the scene and his incredibly expensive car. Another one is Brittney Spears, granted she is not an athlete but she makes way more money than she deserves. She earns over $700,000 a month and blows it on bullshit. It was reported she spends $102,000 a month on entertainment, gifts and vacations, but just $1,600 on groceries and household supplies. I spend more than that a month on my household and I don't make anywhere near 700k a month.
This is something that needs be looked at and reconsidered.
