8. Appendix
8.1 Appendix A - Using a Virtual Drive
Newer computers are routinely being built without a floppy drive. A floppy drive is needed to create Ghost boot floppies. If the PC being used to create the floppy disk does not have a floppy drive, a virtual floppy drive can be used. The following steps outline the procedure for downloading and installing a virtual floppy drive program.
- Open a web browser and go to http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html
- Click the Download link towards the bottom left of the screen.
- Click the vfd21-050404.zip link at the top right of the screen. Save the file to the hard drive and open the file using WinZip or another decompression utility.
- Click the Extract button.
- Choose a location to extract the files to. In this example, a folder called vflop was created in the My Documents directory. Press the Extract button.
- Open up the folder the files were extracted to.
- Double click the vfdwin.exe file.
- Click the Driver tab. Ensure Auto is selected for the Start Type and click the Install button.
- Click the Start button to start the driver.
- Click the Association Tab and click the Check All button.
- Click the Shell tab and place a checkmark next to the boxes shown in the image and click the Apply button. Close the VFD Control Panel.
- Go to the desktop and an icon labeled VFD Drive 0 will be there. Double Click the icon to start the virtual floppy drive.
- Open up My Computer. A floppy disk will now be listed.
The Virtual Floppy Drive can be used just like a physical floppy drive. The only difference is there are no floppy disks to mess with and a boot CD must be created since Ghost cannot boot from a virtual floppy drive.
8.2 Appendix B - Modifying protocol.ini
Ghosting computers with multiple NIC‘s involves modifying the protocol.ini file located on the boot floppy. Ghost will automatically use the first NIC it detects. Sometimes this is not the NIC being used for a network connection. The protocol.ini file can be modified to tell Ghost which NIC is to be used.
8.2.1 Determining the NIC
- Right click My Computer and select Properties
- Click on the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.
- Expand Network Adapters by clicking the plus sign. Right click the adapter being used and select properties.
- Record the information next to Location and click OK. Close the Device Manager.
8.2.2 Changing the protocol.ini
- Insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive and open the floppy drive by going into My Computer and double clicking the 3 1/2 Floppy Icon.
- Double click the NET folder.
- Double click the protocol.ini file
- Scroll down to [NIC] and type in the following information that was recorded from Device Manager.
- busnum = Bus Number
- devnum = Device Number
- funcnum = Function Number
- Save the file by clicking File –» Save. Close the file by click the x at the top right corner.
