7. Creating the Ghost Image
Now that the boot floppy and/or the boot CD is created the Ghost Image can now be created. The following steps outline the process necessary to complete the task.
7.1 Creating the Shared Folder for Images
On the computer that will be storing the images a shared folder must be created in order for Norton Ghost to save the image.
- Open up My Computer and double click the C: drive.
- Click on File –» New –» Folder to create a folder for storing the images.
- Give the folder a name such as Images.
- Right click the folder and select Properties.
- Click on the Sharing tab.
- Select ‘Share this folder’ and click the Permissions button.
- Highlight the Everyone group and click the Remove button. Click the Add button.
- Type in the username of the user being used to create the images. The user must exist in Active Directory. Alternately the group the user belongs to can be used as well. Click the Check Names button and then click the OK button.
- Place a checkmark in the Full Control box beneath Allow and click the OK button.
- Click the Security Tab and then click the Add button.
- Repeat steps 8 and 9 to add the user or group to the security list and click the OK button.
- Close the properties window.
7.2 Adding the Ghost.exe to the Shared Folder
In order for Ghost to work, the ghost.exe must be placed into the shared folder.
- Open up the shared folder and on File –» New –» Folder to create a folder for storing the ghost.exe.
- Give the folder a name such as g2003
- Copy the contents of the Norton Ghost directory on the computer with Norton Ghost installed into the new folder. The Ghost directory is normally C:\Program Files\Symantec\Norton Ghost 2003.
7.3 Imaging the Computer
Now that the shared folder is created on the computer acting as the image repository, the process of imaging the computer can begin. The following steps outline the process necessary to complete the task.
- Insert the boot floppy into the floppy drive of the PC or insert the boot CD into the CD-ROM drive and restart the computer.
- The computer will boot from the floppy or CD and starts the Norton Ghost routine. Press the enter key to accept the username, this is the username specified when creating the boot floppy. Type in the password associated with the username and press the enter key.
- Once the account is validated a command prompt labeled A:\> will appear. Take note of the Local Name and Remote name. These should match the parameters set when creating the boot floppy. Type in the Local Name and press enter. In the example used this is P:.
- At the prompt, change to the directory where the Ghost exe is stored. Do this by typing in cd foldername and pressing enter, where foldername is the folder containing the ghost.exe. In the example this folder is g2003.
- At the prompt type in ghost and press enter. This will start the Ghost Program.
- Press the enter key at this screen.
- Ensure Local is highlighted and press the enter key. Ensure Disk is highlighted and press the enter key. Ensure to Image is highlighted and press the enter key.
- Press the enter key at this screen.
- Currently, Ghost is looking at the g2003 directory. Press the tab key until the folder with the up arrow is selected and press the enter key. Ghost is now in the P: directory where the images should be stored. In the example, separate folders were created for server and workstation images. Highlight where the image is to be stored by using the up or down arrow keys and press enter. If separate folders were not used, proceed to the next step.
- Type in the name of the image and press the enter key.
- DOS can only recognize 2GB and will give a warning that there is not enough space to store the image. Fast Compression is highlighted by default. Use the tab key to change to No compression or High compression and press enter.
- Press the Tab key once to highlight Yes and press enter to begin the imaging process.
- The time Ghost takes to create the image depends on the size of the image and network speed. Once completed a box stating the image was created successfully will appear. Press the enter key to continue.
- Using the down arrow key, highlight Exit and press the enter key.
- Press the enter key to quit Ghost.
- Remove the floppy disk or bootable CD and reboot the computer.
