6. Bootable CD
Not all computers come equipped with a floppy drive. The need to create a bootable Ghost CD is increasing. Also, CD‘s are less likely to become corrupt and lose data. The following steps provide the proper information to create a bootable CD. A boot floppy is needed prior to creating the CD.
6.1 Creating the Boot CD
In order to create the bootable CD a raw image file must be created from the boot floppy disk. This image will be burned to a CD. A Program called 3.5 Master can be used to create the raw image file.
6.1.1 Installing 3.5 Master
- Open a web browser and go to http://www.mirkes.de/en/freeware/flpmstr.php
- Click on the download link at the top left. Choose a directory to save the file and click the OK button.
- Navigate to where the file was saved and double click it to start the install routine.
- Click the Next button.
- Read the license agreement and select ‘I accept the agreement’. Click the Next button.
- Click the Next button to accept the default installation path.
- Ensure Full Installation is selected and click the Next button.
- Click the Next button to accept the default Start Menu Folder.
- If a Quick Launch Icon or a Desktop Icon is needed place a check mark in the boxes next to each option and then click the Next button.
- Click the Install button to begin the installation process.
- Click the Finish button.
6.2 Creating the RAW Image File
The following steps outline the process for creating the raw image file using 3.5 Master.
- Ensure the boot floppy disk created in Section 5.1 is inserted in the floppy drive.
- Start 3.5 Master by double clicking the desktop icon or using the quick launch icon.
- Click the Read Disk button.
- Click the Browse button depicted by ellipses to choose a location to save the raw image file
- Type in a name for the raw image file that will be easily remembered. Ensure ‘Raw Files (*.raw)’ is selected as the ‘Save as Type’ and click the Save button.
- Click the Read button.
- 3.5 Master will create the raw image file.
- Click the Close button when complete.
6.3 Burning the Bootable CD
Roxio Easy CD creator was used to burn the CD. At this time, no other CD burning program has been tested.
- Start Roxio Easy CD Creator.
- Select ‘make a data CD’ –» ‘dataCD’
- Click on File –» New CD Project –» Bootable CD.
- Ensure the following items are selected
- Bootable CD Type - Floppy Disk Emulation (1.44 MB)
- Load Segment - Leave at Default
- Sector Count - Leave at Default
- Use Existing Image File - Needs to be checked
- Click the Browse button
- Navigate to the location of the raw image file created with 3.5 Master. Select the file and click the Open button. Click the OK button.
- Click the Record button depicted by a red circle.
- Review the settings. Ensure a blank CD is inserted into the CD-RW drive and ensure ‘Finalize CD’ is selected. Click the ‘Start Recording’ button.
- The time it takes to burn the CD is dependant on the CD-RW drive. Click on the OK button when finished.
