5. Bootable Floppy Disk

In order for Norton Ghost to perform its duty, a bootable floppy disk must first be created. The boot floppy disk can also be converted to a bootable CD, which will be covered later in this document.

5.1 Creating a Boot Floppy with Norton Ghost 2003

The following steps provide the necessary information to create a boot floppy disk

  1. Start Norton Ghost 2003 by double clicking the Ghost icon located in the task bar.
  2. The following screen will appear.
  3. Click on Ghost Utilities.
  4. Click on Norton Ghost Boot Wizard
  5. Click on Drive Mapping Boot Disk.
  6. Scroll through the list of NIC cards and select the NIC the computer has installed. If the NIC is not listed, proceed to step 5.1.1, otherwise, click the Next button.
  7. Ensure Use PC-DOS is selected and click the Next button.
  8. Select ‘The IP settings will be statically defined’ and fill out the information as such:
    1. First IP Address - This address is used by Ghost to access the network. Do not enter an IP that is already in use on your network.
    2. Subnet Mask - This needs to be the appropriate subnet mask for the network being used.
    3. Gateway - This is the address to the switch or router being used in the network.
    4. DNS Address - This is the IP address to the server acting as the DNS server for the network, typically a Domain Controller.
  9. Insert a blank 1.44 MB floppy disk into the floppy drive. Click the Next button to accept the defaults.
  10. Review the settings and click the Next button to format the floppy disk.
  11. Click the Start button to begin the format routine.
  12. Click the OK button on the Warning box.
  13. Click the OK button when the format complete box pops up.
  14. Click on the Close button to continue with the floppy disk creation.
  15. Norton Ghost will now write files to the floppy disk.
  16. Click on the Finish button.

The boot floppy disk is now created and the computers can now be imaged.

5.1.1 Adding NIC Drivers to Ghost

Norton Ghost 2003 comes with a comprehensive list of NIC‘s. In the occasion the NIC being used is not listed, the NIC driver can be added to Ghost. The steps below begin at step 6 of Section 5.1. It is assumed that Norton Ghost is installed and the program has been started.

  1. Download the latest drivers for the NIC being used. Sometimes the drivers will come in a zip file or a self-extracting exe. The driver will need to be extracted prior to continuing. Extract the files to a location easily remembered.
  2. Click on the Add button.
  3. NDIS2 Driver will be selected. Click the OK button.
  4. Click the Browse button and navigate to directory the NIC driver was downloaded to
  5. Select the DOS driver and click the Open button
  6. Type in a name for the driver. The driver name is limited to eight characters and cannot have spaces. The Driver Name must end with a dollar sign ($). Click the OK button.
  7. The new driver will be added. Give the driver a name that is easily recognizable and click the Next button.
  8. Continue following the instructions for creating a boot floppy at Step 7 Section 5.1.
